Paper pattern for Computer Science GATE 2016

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2016 will be conducted by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore from 30th January to 7th February, 2016. The examination is scheduled to be conducted over a span of one week.

The paper pattern followed for the Computer Science for the last two years is detailed below:

Total marks for topics in 2014 (Paper I, Paper II and Paper III):

  • Discrete Mathematics: 63
  • Digital Logic: 17
  • Computer Organization and Architecture: 16
  • Theory of Computation: 15
  • Data Structures and Algorithms: 56
  • Operating System: 23
  • Compiler Design: 12
  • DBMS: 17
  • Computer Networks: 24
  • Software Engineering and Web Technologies: 14
  • Verbal Ability: 27
  • Numerical Ability: 16
  • Engineering Mathematics: N.A.


Total marks for topics in 2015 (Paper I, Paper II and Paper III):

  • Discrete Mathematics: 42
  • Digital Logic: 7
  • Computer Organization and Architecture: 22
  • Theory of Computation: 16
  • Data Structures and Algorithms: 54
  • Operating System: 30
  • Compiler Design: 18
  • DBMS: 13
  • Computer Networks: 27
  • Software Engineering and Web Technologies: 1
  • Verbal Ability: 21
  • Numerical Ability: 24
  • Engineering Mathematics: 35

The major difference in the marks allotted to each section is in Discrete Mathematics, Digital Logic, Software Engineering and Web Technologies, Numerical Ability and Engineering Mathematics.

The competitive exam is conducted every year as a gateway to postgraduate courses at the Master’s and Doctoral level across the country, and also to MHRD and other Government Scholarships, Assistantships in Engineering, Technology, Architecture and Science. The score obtained by candidates in GATE is also used by few PSUs during their recruitment.
